We’ve heard the story a thousand times. You’d really like to drive your full size Chevy a bit more, but today’s distracted drivers and increased traffic on today’s roads just puts too much stress on you as a driver trying to get your Impala, Biscayne, or Bel-Air stopped safely when traffic hits the brakes in front of you. We get it. We’ve driven plenty of manual drum brake cars in our time and on a busy street or highway it is the definition of a white knuckle ride. But don’t hang up those car keys! Upgrading your old drum brakes to a more effective and safer front disc brake system is one of the best safety upgrades you can make to your ’55-’64 Chevy car.
Everything You Need to Update Your Classic Chevy from Drum to Disc BrakesOur 11-inch single piston caliper disc brake conversion kit is a vast improvement for your ’55-’64 full size Chevy car. Using a unique caliper adapter bracket along with standard GM 11-inch rotors and common ’78-’88 GM “Metric” brake calipers, this kit is 100 percent bolt on with zero modifications to your factory drum brake spindle. Note that this kit does not mount to the 1958 model year spindle due to specific differences this one year spindle has. Additionally, this kit does not work with aftermarket 2-inch drop spindles. We do offer a ’55-’57 Chevy 55-57 Disc Brake Kit For Drop Spindles that is compatible with our 55-57 Chevy 2-inch Drop Spindles For GM Metric Calipers for use with GM Metric calipers if you’re looking for that extra low ride height up front with a ’57 Chevy disc brake conversion.
Our front disc brake conversion kit includes rotors, calipers, caliper brackets, bearings, seals, brake hoses, and all installation hardware. There is no need to cut/flare your existing brake lines or make any additional changes at the wheel other than using a 14-inch disc brake spec wheel or upgrading to a 15-inch or larger wheel for caliper clearance. Due to the brake rotors used in this kit track width is increased 7/8-inch per side (or 1-3/4-inch total). This is typically not a problem unless running wide aftermarket wheels that are already close to your fender edges.
A Significant Braking Upgrade for The MoneyOur ’55-’64 full size Chevy front disc brake kit is easy on the wallet too! For not much more than the cost of a complete drum brake overhaul (new drums, shoes, hardware, wheel cylinders, bearings, seals, hoses, etc.) you can upgrade your Biscayne, Impala, Tri-Five, or other full size Chevy car to the power and safety of disc brakes. We can offer such a cost effective kit by utilizing proven components, such as ’69-’72 Chevy rotors and ’78-’88 GM Metric calipers as part of the kit. These items have been used on countless millions of Chevy cars and will get the job done without the need for custom “race car” bits like two-piece rotors and other special machined adapters/hardware. If you’re looking for something a bit “race inspired” we do offer this same disc brake upgrade with 55-64 Disc Brake Conversion Kit W/ Drilled and Slotted Rotors, providing that great look with open spoke wheels.
Using these 11-inch vented rotors and single piston GM Metric calipers with large 2-1/2-inch pistons provide a huge increase in stopping power over the original drum brakes on your Chevy. The industry standard brake pads (a great street compound that offers exceptional braking with low dust), bearings, seals, and hardware mean that any emergency replacement parts are as close as your corner parts store, getting you back on the road in no time without having to wait for custom parts to be shipped. Not to mention how much easier it is to service the typical disc brake system vs the much more involved and confusing drum brake setup with all it’s return springs, different brake lining sizes, and more to trip you up.
With any drum to disc brake conversion kit the properly sized master cylinder is important to effective braking operation and proper brake pedal feel. The factory ’55-’64 drum brake master cylinder is a single reservoir setup that will not be compatible with your new front disc brakes. Therefore, we highly recommend adding a power brake booster with dual bowl master cylinder to this kit. We have both a 55-64 Full Size Chevy 7-inch Power Brake Booster/Master Kit kit and an 55-64 Full Size Chevy 8-inch Power Brake Booster/Master Kit kit, both with a 1-inch bore disc/drum “Corvette” master cylinder. Both options are a direct bolt on your firewall and require minimal brake line changes to plumb into your current brake system when converting drum brakes to disc.
